Women approach STRIVE ready to capture their dreams and move beyond barriers -- be it the gender wage gap, childcare challenges, or a history of trauma. These challenges were only made more difficult during the pandemic.

STRIVE recognizes that in order for women living below the poverty line to be successful in the workforce, they may need specialized supports and training programs. STRIVE is committed to delivering intentional programing that specifically addresses the needs of these populations. We prepare women for both traditional and non traditional roles. From healthcare to construction, they are ready to succeed.

Intentional programing builds in layers of services for women, who make up 42% of STRIVE students, empowering them to thrive:

  • Professional development workshops & panels
  • The Women’s Empowerment Network (WEN) and other mentorship opportunities
  • Peer support groups & mental health services
  • Childcare referrals and parenting supports
  • Financial capability workshops

As a result of these supports, graduates are more resilient and empowered as they grow in their careers. We hope to empower the women of STRIVE to become leaders in the workforce.

Romelia Corvacho – STRIVE Alumnus

The impact that STRIVE makes in
one person’s life ripples out to
so many others. So many of my dreams have come true, and I owe so much
of it to STRIVE.
— Romelia Corvacho

At age 17, Romelia immigrated from Peru to the United States after a terrorist attack on her home country. She believed the U.S. was a land of opportunity. Due to language and cultural barriers, she was unable to get an education or a job until she came across an advertisement for STRIVE and decided to enroll.

The STRIVE program taught Romy about American work culture and professionalism. As a result of the skills she learned and her own hard work, Romy achieved her career goals: working in healthcare, earning a Bachelor's and Master's degrees, buying a house, becoming a U.S. citizen, and continuing on the path to upward mobility.

STRIVE continues to follow up with her regularly and helped her when she lost her job during COVID. Using the business development team and the interview skills she acquired at STRIVE, she was hired as the Health Equity Manager at Literacy Partners. Romy also used what she’d learned to coach her sister and nephew, and both of them landed jobs at NYU.

STRIVE is Dedicated to Uplifting Women in the Workplace

STRIVE’s Women's Empowerment Luncheon is an annual fundraiser celebrating women by sharing the stories of STRIVE’s women graduates' journey to employment and highlighting the success of powerful women leaders and influencers. Funds raised provide a direct path for motivated women to pursue financial security and economic mobility that transforms their lives and the lives of their family.
